Will Butler + Sister Square's 'Arrow of Time' Tailor-Fit For Dancing Around The Living Room
Updated: Sep 6
Will Butler + Sister Squares — composed of Miles Francis, Julie Shore, Jenny Shore, and Sara Dobbs — are gearing up to release their self-titled album on September 22nd via Merge. As a preview of what's to come, they have unveiled their latest single and accompanying video, "Arrow of Time." At its core, Will Butler + Sister Squares creates music with a warm, humane soul. The song is a cocoon of grooves that are tailor-fit for dancing around the living room with the ones you love, or a packed venue with those looking to lose themselves to the rhythm.

The track, originally tested out during the band's 2022 tour, offers a mesmerizing groove that seems to possess its own gravitational pull. Inspired by the documentary "A Brief History of Time," "Arrow of Time" delves into the concept of time running backwards and the disintegration of everything into heat energy. Inspired by A Brief History of Time, Errol Morris’ acclaimed documentary about Stephen Hawking, “Arrow of Time” offers an otherworldly groove so irresistible it nearly creates its own gravitational pull. “Hawking describes the concept, in paraphrase, as ‘you might see a teacup fall off a table and smash into bits, but you never see the bits come back together. Or if you did, you would instantly be aware that time is running backwards,’” Butler explains. “Lyrically, I feel like I was maybe trying to write a Pixies song about that idea — ‘Here comes your man,’ but instead of something coming, it’s just everything slowly dissolving into heat energy.” Audiences have already shown a strong response to the track's live performances, with fans eagerly inquiring about its inclusion on any previous albums. Will Butler + Sister Squares are excited to embark on a tour this fall, where they will bring their songs to life on stage. The journey will kick off in Brooklyn, NY, at Elsewhere Zone One. Notably, Will Butler has also been tapped to score the upcoming film "Lips Like Sugar," a crime thriller starring Woody Harrelson and Owen Wilson.
